1. Foreword to culture strategy

Bexley is a unique and special part of London where creativity thrives through the work of local artists and creative companies, the availability of ample heritage sites of international significance and a colourful programme of events and festivals that offer something for everyone. This creative energy has the potential to drive positive change, community cohesion and place making as we look to the future of our borough and strive to become the best place to live, work or visit in London.

I am therefore delighted to introduce this brand new Culture Strategy, the product of work by the Council and its many arts and culture partners who deliver creative works and programmes throughout the borough. The rich network of partnerships is the foundation upon which this strategy seeks to harness the potential of arts, culture and the creative industries to bring benefit to everyone in Bexley. It will be the foundation for growing the vibrancy of our neighbourhoods and town centres, bringing investment and opening up the opportunities of the future, as well as improving the wellbeing of our residents.

This strategy has 4 crosscutting themes that draw out the value of culture as a tool for growth, positive change and pride in place:

  • growing places
  • growing talent
  • growing jobs
  • growing health and wellbeing

Bexley is the borough where city, river and countryside connect and culture can help us to make the most of the many assets and advantages that we have to become a place like no other where communities, businesses and visitors will experience the real benefits of positive growth.
