This week (5 to 9 October), Bexley is celebrating Corporate Parenting Week, an opportunity to recognise and champion the children and young people in our care, while highlighting the shared responsibility we have to support them to achieve their full potential.
Celebrations began on Tuesday 6 October with a special launch event attended by the Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Councillor Chris Taylor, Director of Children’s Services Stephen Kitchman, Children’s Services staff and members of Positive Journeys Seniors, Bexley’s forum for children and young people in care.
A variety of activities and events will take place throughout the week, including the annual football match at Goals, delivered by Charlton Athletic Community Trust. The celebrations will conclude with the annual You Are Fantastic Awards on Friday 9 October, recognising the achievements, resilience and talents of children and young people in care.
This year’s events are proudly supported by ITRM, Charlton Athletic Community Trust, Fleet Tutors, Prospero Tutors, Fresh Start in Education and Martrix.
Councillor Chris Taylor, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:
Corporate Parenting Week is one of the highlights of the year, giving us the opportunity to celebrate the amazing children and young people in our care. Their achievements, talents and determination inspire us every day, and this week is about recognising everything they have accomplished. We want every child and young person to know that they are valued, supported and believed in, and that we will continue to do everything we can to help them achieve their ambitions. I would also like to thank our carers, staff, partners and sponsors whose commitment helps make these opportunities possible."
Councillor David Leaf, Leader of Bexley Council, said:
Every member of the council has a role to play as a corporate parent, and with that comes a responsibility to be ambitious for the children and young people in our care. We must strive to provide the same opportunities, encouragement and support that any good parent would want for their own child. Corporate Parenting Week is a reminder of that commitment and a chance to reflect on the progress we have made together, while continuing to champion the aspirations and futures of our children and young people."
