This week (15 to 21 June) is Learning Disability Week, a national awareness week that encourages people to learn more about learning disability and how we can create more inclusive communities.
The theme this year is "Do you see me?", which highlights the importance of making sure people with a learning disability are seen, heard, valued and included in all aspects of life.
In Bexley, we are committed to helping people with a learning disability live healthy, independent and fulfilling lives. We work with local organisations, community groups and partners to provide support, opportunities and activities that help people stay connected, build confidence and be active members of their communities.
During Learning Disability Week, residents can also visit the SEND Summer Marketplace hosted by Bexley Voice on Tuesday 16 June from 9.30am to 12.30pm at Danson Youth Centre.
The free drop-in event is open to anyone caring for a loved one with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Visitors will have the opportunity to find out more about local support services, activities and opportunities available over the summer, as well as meet organisations that work with children, young people and families across Bexley.
A range of free wellbeing sessions will also be available throughout the morning, including sound baths, yoga, massage and reiki.
For more information, visit Bexley Voice's website.
There will also be opportunities to get active and connect with others during the week. Residents are invited to join Bexley Mencap's Sports Festival and Community Day at Danson Park on Saturday 20 June from 11am to 3pm.
Organised in partnership with Danson Park Water Sports, the event promises a fun-filled day for people of all ages and abilities.
There will be plenty to enjoy, including kayaking and sailing sessions (booking required), a team paddleboarding challenge, carnival games, yoga, personal training and other sports to try.
Visitors can also enjoy food and drink stalls, including Sarto Lounge, cakes and a barbecue, and meet local charities and community organisations to find out more about the support they offer.
Please book tickets for the water sports by visiting Bexley Mencap.
Councillor Janice Ward-Wilson, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said:
Learning Disability Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness and improve understanding of learning disability. This year's theme, 'Do you see me?', encourages us all to think about how people with a learning disability are seen, heard and included in everyday life.
By challenging misconceptions and creating more inclusive communities, we can help ensure that people with a learning disability have the same opportunities to live independently, contribute to their communities and achieve their goals."
