Robust enforcement action against littering throughout Bexley in 2025 led to a 52% increase in the number of Fixed Penalty Notices issued compared to 2024.
The Council introduced more patrols and higher fines in 2025 and this has clearly had a significant impact.
During 2025 a total of 2,979 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were issued for littering offences across the borough compared with 1,956 in 2024.
106 people have been prosecuted with some cases resulting in criminal convictions for littering related offences.
Littering blights local neighbourhoods, harms the environment and places an unnecessary burden on public resources.
Councillor Richard Diment, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said:
Keeping Bexley clean and green is a top priority for the Council and we have always been clear that we have zero tolerance of littering and that those caught doing this can expect to be fined and prosecuted.
We have installed 285 additional bins and refurbished over three hundred existing bins so with over a 1000 litter bins throughout the Borough there really is no excuse for littering.
We will continue to use our enforcement powers where necessary to deter offenders and to protect Bexley’s local communities”.
Dropping litter is a criminal offence and on the spot fixed penalty notices of up to £300 will be issued to anyone caught littering or not clearing up after their dog.
The Council encourages everyone to take responsibility for their waste and to use the bins provided. By working together Bexley can remain a cleaner, greener borough for all.
