Bexley residents helped deliver another increase in the Borough’s recycling rate for the third year in a row.
The latest figures from Defra (the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) show that the borough recycled 48% of its household waste in 2024/25 (up from 46% in the previous year). This means Bexley’s recycling rate is above the London average (32.7%) and the national average (42.3%).
The figures also show a 3.5% drop in the amount of waste produced by each household in the borough. This means that our residents are wasting less and recycling more and that the Borough is reducing pollution and helping to protect the environment.
Paul Thorogood, the Council’s Chief Executive said:
We would like to thank residents for the work they have done to help us increase recycling in the Borough. Recycling is good for the environment so we are enormously proud to have once again increased our recycling rate.”

Bexley’s first community Reuse Shop opened earlier this year and the Council has also extended its weekly food waste service to all flats in the Borough. With the introduction of these initiatives and the continued support of residents, the Council hopes to reduce waste and increase its recycling rate even further next year.
Residents can order a free food caddie and food waste box at Bexley food waste.
Food waste is collected weekly.
