Clamping down on fly-tipping

New signs are being put up throughout the borough to deter fly-tipping and make it easier for residents to report this illegal action so offenders can be held accountable.

The London Borough of Bexley will not tolerate fly-tipping of any kind and is clamping down on it with new measures.

Starting in mid-June, we will be putting up 70 signs reminding fly-tipping criminals of the fines they face and that they will be caught. The signs also have a QR code to help residents report this type of offence.

The Council will use data to inform the location of the signs to cover the most affected areas in our borough, while a number of signs will be placed around our mini recycling sites.

Councillor Richard Diment, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:

We will not tolerate any form of fly-tipping in this borough, and those caught dumping waste can expect to be caught and fined.

We need local people to work with us to keep our borough clean and free of rubbish, and I hope these new signs will make it easier for residents to report this criminal behaviour which only serves to blight our community.

Keeping Bexley clean is a top priority for the Council and we want to make sure Bexley is a green and safe place to live.”

The borough deals with over 4,000 fly-tipping reports on average each year, and the Council has brought in stricter penalties for offenders, increasing fixed penalty notices from £400 to £1,000.

It has been proven in other areas that signs such as these have helped decrease the number of fly-tipping incidents.

It is quick and easy to report fly-tipping to the Council using the Bexley Fix My Street reporting tool, or email AreaTeamSupport@bexley.gov.uk
