The London Borough of Bexley, in partnership with DigVentures, is hosting a week-long community archaeological excavation and activities at Lesnes Abbey Woods this April.
The Archaeological activities taking place from 21 to 26 April offer a rare, hands-on opportunity for the public to work alongside professional archaeologists to uncover the secrets of the site.
This landmark event is part of ‘Lesnes 500,’ a two-year project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Abbey’s dissolution.
Councillor Cafer Munur, Cabinet Member for Place Shaping, said:
This one-of-a-kind historical dig and accompanying activities gives residents and visitors the chance to literally touch the history of Bexley.
We are thrilled to partner with DigVentures to mark this 500th anniversary with discovery and education for all ages. We welcome residents, visitors and history enthusiasts to trade their modern gadgets for trowels this April and help us uncover the deep roots of our local heritage.
Who knows? You may be the first person to discover something new”.
The first two days of the dig (Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 April) provide dedicated sessions to local schools. The last remaining public digging sessions available are on Thursday 23 April at 9.30am or 1pm. Places can be booked online.
Participants and visitors will gain insight into the scientific world of archaeology, learning professional field skills such as excavation and precision digging, identifying and handling historical finds and recording discoveries.
Beyond the dig sites, the week will feature a curated programme of workshops, historical talks and displays led by expert historians, archaeologists and artists. Activities include:
