Last Friday, we temporarily closed Danson Lake due to the presence of blue-green algae - a naturally occurring phenomenon in freshwater environments, especially during warm weather.
We immediately notified the Environment Agency, as is protocol, and our Environmental Health team has been closely monitoring the lake. Today, Monday 18 August, following expert advice, the lake has reopened with restrictions:
- Fishing is limited to certain areas
- Dog owners: please keep pets out of the water
- Signage remains in place to keep everyone informed
Blue-green algae can form blooms that may look like scum or discoloured water. While not all blooms are harmful, some can produce toxins that pose risks to people and animals. These blooms are driven by natural factors like temperature and nutrient levels - we can't prevent them, but we can respond quickly and responsibly.
The health and safety of our community, wildlife, and environment is always our top priority. We acted swiftly and in consultation with experts to ensure the lake remains safe and well-managed.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
