Further £115k invested to make Bexley even more clean and green

London Borough of Bexley is committed to making our borough an even cleaner, greener and safer place and we’ve introduced a range of initiatives to achieve this.

The latest investment by the Council of over £115K in a new state-of-the-art cleaning vehicle follows a previous £450k investment by the Council's street service contractor Countrystyle in four new cutting-edge road cleaning vehicles in 2024.  The new multi-function street sweeper can be used for street washing and also for weed ripping and clearing snow.

In addition to this investment, the Council has smartened up over 350 existing litter bins and installed an extra 285 new high-tech bins at busy locations in town centres and at bus stops.  We have also tackled the sticky issue of chewing gum, successfully securing external funding to clean this up in Bexleyheath town centre, at Sidcup Station, Sidcup High Street and in Welling High Street. New Smartbins have been fitted on some lamp post columns to make it easier for people to dispose of their chewing gum and cigarette litter.

We are supported by over 150 community-spirited residents from across the borough who work with us to help keep their areas looking clean and tidy by carrying out litter picking in their own spare time. If you’d like to help us make the Borough even cleaner and greener by becoming a litter picker, you can apply by visiting the Help clean up your neighbourhood page.

Cllr Diment, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said,

“Keeping Bexley clean and green is a top priority for the Council. We want Bexley to be an even safer, cleaner and greener place to live in and an attractive place for visitors and businesses to thrive.

That’s why we are investing in more efficient high-tech cleaning vehicles.  We have also made it easier for people to dispose of their litter by significantly increasing the overall number of bins in our borough and installing more modern bins that can be used for recycling.

There is no excuse for littering and we will continue to come down hard on those who damage our local areas by doing this”.

Littering, dog fouling and fly-tipping anywhere in a public place are all criminal offences. On the spot fixed penalty notices of up to £300 will be issued to anyone caught littering or not clearing up after their dogs.
