Stoptober is back and we are calling on Bexley’s residents who smoke to join the millions of others who have quit successfully with the campaign.
More than 4.4 million adults in England still smoke, including approximately 14,235 in Bexley. Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable illness and death and quitting is one of the best things you can do for your health.
The good news is that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to quit for good.
Quitting smoking doesn’t just improve your own health and wellbeing; when you quit, your family wins too. Whether it’s being there for loved ones, protecting them from second-hand smoke or simply having more money to spend on the things that matter, stopping smoking can have a positive impact on those around you.
Last year, Bexley’s stop smoking services helped more than 500 residents successfully quit smoking and supported a further 490 residents on their journey to becoming smoke-free. For someone smoking 10 cigarettes a day, quitting could save around £2,500 a year, helping local people improve both their health and finances.
Councillor Janice Ward-Wilson, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care & Health, said:
Stoptober is a great opportunity to join the thousands of people across the country taking a step towards a smoke-free future. This year's ‘Let’s Quit Smoking Together’ message reminds us that quitting isn't something you have to do alone. It's much easier to stop smoking with the right support and there are a range of free local options available to help residents find an approach that works for them. Even if you have tried before, it's never too late to give quitting another go.”
It’s much easier to stop smoking when you get the right help. There is a range of free support available, including local stop smoking services and the NHS Personal Quit Plan. You will also find information about stop smoking aids, including nicotine replacement therapies and vaping on the Stop Smoking London website.
Residents can find out more about local stop smoking support by visiting the Bexley Stop Smoking webpage.
