Litter bins improved and more installed throughout Bexley

Over 350 litter bins across the Borough have been improved and an additional 285 new bins have been installed as part of a Council initiative to reduce littering and smarten up the borough.

This means there are more bins in shopping areas, outside schools and park entrances and at the busiest bus stops in Bexley.

New modern bins with separate recycling and general waste compartments have been installed making it easier for people to dispose of their litter and to recycle more of their rubbish. In future, as all of the borough’s existing litter bins wear out, they will be replaced with newer and more modern bins.

Twenty new Smartbins are being fitted on lamp post columns in Bexleyheath Town Centre to make it easier for people to dispose of their chewing gum and cigarette litter. This follows a clean-up operation to clear gum in that area that took place in autumn 2024. The new Smartbins are made from recycled aluminium and stainless steel and are designed so that they can be fitted to a lamp post and therefore don’t add clutter in public spaces.

Councillor Richard Diment – Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Places said:

Keeping Bexley clean and green is a top priority for the Council and we’ve always been clear that we have zero tolerance of littering.  We want Bexley to be a safer, greener place to live in and an attractive place for visitors and businesses to thrive.

By increasing the overall number of bins in our borough significantly and investing in more modern ones, that enable people to recycle. we’re making it easier for everyone to dispose of their litter as well as increasing recycling.

There is no excuse for littering and we will continue to come down hard on those who damage our local areas by doing this."

Littering, dog fouling and fly-tipping anywhere in a public place are all criminal offences. On the spot fixed penalty notices of up to £300 will be issued to anyone caught littering or not clearing up after their dogs.

Report these offences by emailing full details and any supporting evidence to areasupportteam@bexley.gov.uk.
