Making Bexley even greener

Image of a green heart with words #GreenBexley

The London Borough of Bexley is committed to improving our environment and has a clear plan to achieve an even greener Borough for our community.

Cllr Rags Sandhu, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Culture and Leisure said:

Bexley Council has a strong environmental record, from boosting recycling and protecting our green spaces to installing new EV charging points and improving energy efficiency.

Unlike other local authorities, we've always prioritised action over rhetoric and common sense over climate alarmism.

Our approach delivers for the environment, saves taxpayer money, and enjoys the support of local people."

Practical actions that we are taking

  • Bexley is one of the top three Councils in London for recycling, and thanks to our residents, we have consistently increased recycling rates (now at 48%) for the last three years. We were one of the first Councils to introduce a free weekly food recycling service for households and have recently extended this to flats. 99.7% of all households in Bexley have access to the recycling and food waste collection service. We also run free cookery workshops for residents to help them reduce food waste
  • we have increased the number of electric charging points across the borough, including 400+ new Ubitricity EV points installed over the past year
  • we have outstanding outdoor learning facilities to support understanding of nature and our environment - including the award-winning ‘The Clearing’ classroom at Lesnes Abbey, which has just won a RIBA award
  • we are investing £2.5m in our playgrounds to encourage families outdoors, where they can build a stronger connection with nature
  • we are successfully promoting the Warm Homes Fund, supporting a number of residents to improve efficiency in heating their homes in winter
  • we are working with partners to restore and protect natural habitats on Erith riverside
  • we are developing a clear plan to protect our green spaces while meeting the increasing need for new homes. We have a Local Plan that promotes environmental sustainability and we are opposing the Mayor of London and the Government's plans to destroy our Green Belt
  • we have a School Waste Action Officer who goes into local schools and works with children, teaching them to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and we have just celebrated the annual School Green Awards.  We have several Repair Cafes in the Borough focused on getting people to reuse items by taking them along and getting them fixed for free. We also run a Reuse Shop at Foots Cray Reuse and Recycling centre
  • we participate in a national scheme to repurpose construction materials from other riverside locations. In the Riverside Gardens in Erith, we have been able to reuse and preserve the granite blocks removed from the old flood defence wall at Chelsea Embankment as part of the Tideway works
  • we have switched our streetlights to LED, saving money as they use less energy, which is good for taxpayers and the environment
