On Wednesday (30 April) at the London Borough of Bexley Full Council meeting, all Members agreed to this motion, proposed by Councillor Howard Jackson:
The London Borough of Bexley is saddened and disturbed by the unprovoked aggression against Ukraine by Vladimir Putin, which has caused horrific devastation and created an escalating humanitarian crisis with millions displaced or affected. In light of this and as a way of expressing support for the people of Ukraine and members of our communities who are from or who have ties with Ukraine, this Council;
- Condemns the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine and stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and their families and friends, including those local to Bexley.
- Has welcomed Ukrainian refugees into our Borough, provided them with services and support and stands ready to provide further support to innocent people displaced and affected by this unprovoked act of Russian aggression orchestrated by Putin.
- Commends Bexley's residents, businesses and community groups for welcoming Ukrainian refugees into the Borough, for their generosity of spirit and for providing them with homes, jobs and other assistance.
- Will work with and support the ongoing efforts of our local communities to provide help, support and comfort to those in need."
Leader of the Council, Cllr Baroness O’Neill of Bexley OBE said:
We shared the widespread shock at Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine in February 2022 and as a borough we came together – as so many others did in the UK - to support Ukraine.
Many of our residents offered refuge in their own homes to Ukrainian nationals and the Council has worked with and supported local charities, community groups and partners across the borough to find ways to provide additional help, ranging from language classes, mother and toddler groups to events and employment help.
As the conflict continues our support for Ukraine remains steadfast. This is reflected in last night’s vote, where all Members agreed to Cllr Jackson’s motion.”
