Over 4,500 tonnes of food waste collected annually thanks to you

Thanks to your efforts we recycle over 4,500 tonnes of food waste each year and Bexley consistently ranks as one of London’s top recyclers.

Recycled food waste is turned into fertiliser for farmers and into renewable energy that is used for electricity in homes in Bexley. Recycling just six teabags generates enough energy to boil a kettle to make another cuppa! Nine recycled banana peels could generate enough energy to fully charge a laptop. A caddy load of food waste could generate enough electricity to power a home for almost an hour.

Imagine what a difference we could make if more of us recycled more of our food waste.

To encourage more residents to recycle their food over the summer our Simpler Recycling Officers have visited over 2,000 flats and 1,000 houses giving out free caddies and guides and talking to people about how important and easy food recycling is to do. However you don’t just need to take our word for it here’s a few of the things the people we’ve spoken to have said about food recycling,

A resident in Welling said:

These caddies are very easy to use. I will no longer have smells from my kitchen bin. It also means I don’t need to empty it so often.”

A resident in Belvedere said:

It’s great to see Bexley Council recycling food waste weekly. It not only helps me reduce my waste, but it is also turned into something useful such as electricity for homes.”

A resident in Erith said:

Thank you! This is a great service and it’s free. I am so pleased to get started with recycling food waste.”

Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Councillor Richard Diment said:

It's great to see so many people making use of our weekly food waste collection service. We know that our residents are keen to recycle more and we want to continue to increase the number of people using this service and in particular to get more residents living in flats recycling their food. We’ve made our food recycling service as easy as possible to use and every food item you recycle saves energy, cuts emissions and reduces the need for raw materials, so let’s keep up the good work Bexley.”

Next time you put out your food recycling, know you are part of a bigger story – turning yesterday’s waste into tomorrow’s resource.
