A plea from our trees

Do you have a street tree outside or near your home? Have you considered if it needs a drink? Perhaps you could give it a bucket of water when taking care of your garden.

Even trees planted several years ago are suffering from lack of water and extreme heat.

Street tree facts

  • it is almost impossible to overwater trees in the summer
  • if a tree’s leaves are turning yellow, red or brown or just crisping up and falling between April and August then it is almost certainly due to lack of water
  • used dishwashing or grey water is ok, as long as you have only used regular washing-up liquid or soaps
  • where trees have a watering bag, once filled, these slowly release water into the soil. However, bags can become damaged and not hold water and be difficult to access when within a cage
  • if in doubt please water the base of the tree
  • another way to help is to remove grass and weeds from the tree pit, these compete with young trees for water and nutrients

Any help you can give local trees will be much appreciated.
