Our Local Highways Maintenance Transparency report for 2025/26 has once again highlighted Bexley’s roads as some of the best maintained in the country, with 84% of our A roads and 81% of our B and C roads, ranked green and in good condition.

The Local Highways Maintenance Transparency report sets out Bexley’s highways maintenance activities and is used by the Department for Transport to monitor yearly progress and to determine eligibility for government funding. It also informs local road maintenance ratings and we expect the new ratings for Bexley’s roads sometime in January 2027.

The report shows that in 2025/26 the Council spent £11.9mn on highways, a 70 per cent increase on the previous year and that only 7.5p in every pound we spent came from the Department for Transport.  We fixed over 4,400 potholes that year and resurfaced 3.89 kilometres of roads and patched 22,005 square metres, the equivalent of three football pitches worth of road surface.

In 26/27 we began a major four-year highways programme that will see even more investment, with over £30 million being spent on maintaining our roads over the next four years.

Bexley’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth & Infrastructure,  Councillor Cameron Smith said:

We are delivering on our manifesto pledge to invest at least £30 million over the next four years to repair Bexley’s roads. 

This report shows the scale of our investment. Over the coming year, we plan to resurface more than 12 kilometres of road and repair the equivalent of seven football pitches' worth of road surface.

Thanks to our highway team’s hard work and our substantial investment, we plan to keep Bexley’s roads among the best-maintained in the country.”
