Off the Ropes championing mental health in Bexley

Off the Ropes

Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services and Health, Cllr Melvin Seymour, visited Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust on Tuesday to learn more about the Off the Ropes project.

As part of the project, a community boxing gym is helping patients at Goldie Leigh Hospital, Lodge Hill in Abbey Wood build their health, focus and confidence.

The sessions feature non-contact boxing, and help adults receiving treatment through Oxleas’ mental health services, by reducing isolation, improve their health and wellbeing , develop their motivation and strengthen their confidence and mood.

Cllr Seymour said:

These sessions are fantastic ways for those in Bexley receiving treatment to improve their mental and physical wellbeing.

Learning more about the sessions today, It was great to see this fantastic initiative in action and hear more about how it’s helping people.”

Those receiving support from Oxleas can attend for free as part of treatment, with affordable community sessions also available.

Off the Ropes is a non-contact boxing and wellbeing charity founded in 2018 by Warren Dunkley, an occupational therapist at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.

In 2019 it became a registered charity, delivering non-contact boxing sessions to people receiving NHS mental health support.
