Children aged four to 11 are invited to a free summer of fun in libraries by joining this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. The challenge starts on 5 July and runs until 6 September.
The theme of this year’s challenge is Story Garden and centres around adventures in nature and the great outdoors. Children are invited to read six or more books of their own choice throughout the summer holidays and collect fun rewards along the way.
All 12 of the borough’s libraries will be taking part which will also see them host a wide range of free events alongside the challenge, including arts, crafts, storytellers, animal handling and much more.
The challenge and the events programme will inspire curiosity about nature, creativity and a love of reading for pleasure that can give children a boost in their education and development.
Councillor Brian Bishop, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said:
The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual highlight for local children and besides being lots of fun, is highly beneficial to the development of the borough’s young minds.
Each year we deliver the Challenge in our libraries and endeavour to help children explore new reading material, develop skills and discover new interests.
Bexley is one of the London’s greenest boroughs and the Story Garden theme is a perfect fit encouraging a summer of exploring our local area whilst discovering some new favourite books.”
The Summer Reading Challenge is run by the Reading Agency and offered by all Bexley Libraries, including community-led libraries in the borough.
Visit the Bexley Libraries website to find out more about the challenge and the events on offer.
All events will feature as part of the #CelebratingBexley programme; a year of celebrating culture, entertainment and heritage in Bexley to mark the 60th anniversary of the London Borough of Bexley.
