We’ve launched a new food recycling service for residential flats above shops and are rolling this out throughout the Borough.
More than 5,000 residential flats across the Borough have already been provided with the new food waste service this year, with each flat receiving a 23L food waste box, a kitchen caddy and a leaflet showing what can and cannot be recycled - all delivered directly to their door by our Simpler Recycling Officers.
No amount of food recycling is too small, with Bexley’s food recycling used to generate energy. Recycling just six teabags generates enough green energy to boil the kettle to make another cuppa.
Watch and listen to local student, Bella, as she talks about how easy it is to recycle your food and why it is so important to do this:
By the end of winter 2025/2026, all of Bexley’s residents who live in flats above shops, approximately 1770 properties, will have been offered the new weekly food recycling service.
You can request your free food recycling caddy and find out more about our weekly food recycling service by visiting our Food waste page.
Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Councillor Richard Diment, said:
“We are committed to ensuring every resident in the Borough can recycle their food, and I am pleased that the weekly food recycling collections that households have had for many years are being extended to residents who live in flats above commercial premises.”
You can even earn green points every time you recycle your food by joining the Bexley Green Points programme. This rewards local people for recycling, reusing and reducing their rubbish with top-scoring individuals having the chance to win £20 voucher prizes every month.
