The Clearing, Lesnes Abbey Woods’ unique outdoor classroom, is a joint winner of the prestigious 2025 Architecture Journal’s Small Project Award.
This incredible space, co-designed by the amazing WonKy and local residents, was judged best in the low-cost design category, beating almost 170 entries.
The judges praised The Clearing’s environmental sustainability, social purpose, and clever use of materials. They highlighted its resourcefulness and playfulness, especially the large parachute that creates an all-weather outdoor classroom with magical, dappled light. The judges believe this scheme will create a lasting tradition for the local community.
Councillor Richard Diment, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood said:
This is a huge win for our brilliant architects, WonKy, and so well deserved! Our thanks also to Gransden Construction Ltd, Creative Nature HQ, the fantastic volunteers at Forest Club and the Friends of Lesnes Abbey who helped bring this vision to life.
The Clearing embodies what we can achieve when we work together to create something special for our community.
Come and experience the magic of The Clearing for yourself!. It’s a truly special place where heritage, sustainability, and education come together in one of Bexley’s most beautiful green spaces.”
