Bexley Council’s arm's length development company BexleyCo has started construction on 121 much needed new homes for local people in Bursted Woods, Barnehurst.

The development of 121 new homes for local people comprising 8 three-bedroom houses and 113 one, two and three bedroom apartments, including 18 affordable homes, includes the conversion of the former locally listed maternity hospital. New landscaping and play space will be created enhancing the local environment.

The Leader of Bexley Council Cllr David Leaf and the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth & Infrastructure Cllr Cameron Smith joined members from the BexleyCo team and building contractor Penenden Heath Developments, at the traditional groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction. 

BexleyCo was established to support the Council to regenerate sites, deliver high quality local housing and provide returns to the Council for reinvestment back into services. 

Leader of the Council, Councillor David Leaf said:

We have ambitious plans to support good quality housing growth in the right places in Bexley and this site will be regenerated with new family homes. This an example of how we’re delivering on our commitment to build more homes for local people and achieving the right kind of growth that preserves the character of our Borough”

Chairman of BexleyCo, Jeremy Stibbe said:  

This development will provide quality new homes for local people, while carefully preserving the historic character of the former maternity hospital as its converted to apartments. It represents another key step in our commitment to delivering to our Business Plan and much-needed homes”.

The site will be progressed in phases with the first new homes due to be completed in November 2027.
