Overview of Crime data

The majority of the following data pages show the London rankings for each crime type based on a rate per 1,000 population of each borough.

This gives a truer picture of a Borough’s crime issues when boroughs’ varying populations is taken into consideration. We have also added the percentage change and direction of travel for the past 12 months, and in comparison to the whole of London. A two year line graph shows seasonal changes for offence figures and where applicable, minor crime categories explain the breakdown or make-up of each crime type. Immediately below are precis’s of each crime type showing direction of travel and where applicable explaining any caveat for the change and/or a brief explanation of how we respond to them.

Offences Breakdown by Ward

This shows the top 10 offences in each Bexley ward and the percentage of crimes those offences represent. Bexleyheath, Erith and Belvedere are the top three wards for offence figures, and this further enforces the decision to have Police led multi-agency Problem Solving Processes (PSPs) in place to help tackle the crime issues collaboratively. Violence Against the Person, Theft and Vehicle Offences regularly feature among the top three crime types in the majority of Bexley wards.

Total Notifiable Offences (TNOs)

TNOs are all the recorded offences added together. Like London overall, Bexley has seen a reduction in TNOs in 2025 of 4.16%, from 16,749 to 16,052 offences per year. This is a larger percentage decrease compared to London overall (which saw an overall -1.81% decrease). Bexley ranks the 5th safest borough in London for 2025, with a rate of 63.2 TNOs per 1,000 population, up one place from 6th in 2024 with a rate of 66.1 per 1,000 population.

Arson and Criminal Damage

Bexley saw an increase of 0.47%, from 2024 to 2025, which represents 8 offences and ranks us 26th in London for offences per 1,000 population. Whilst Bexley saw an increase, there was a small decrease of 1.84% for London overall. The minor category “Criminal Damage” makes up the largest proportion of offences; 94.3% in 2024 compared to 96.9% in 2025, while the low numbers of Arson have decreased from 97 in 2024 to 54 in 2025. It should be noted that many boroughs’ offence rates are at a similar level.

Burglary

There has been a further decrease in Burglary Offences in Bexley of 7.20%, from 806 offences in 2024 to 748 offences in 2025. Bexley saw a decrease of 10.25% for Residential Burglary of a home, a decrease of 9.96% for Business & Community Burglary and an increase of 10.34% for Residential Burglary of Unconnected Building. This is a smaller percentage decrease compared to London overall (9.91%), yet Bexley had the lowest Burglary rate in London (per 1,000 population) in 2024 (rate of 3.18) and 2025 (rate of 2.94).

Drug Offences

Bexley saw an increase in Drug Offences of 37.77%, from 736 offences in 2024 to 1,014 offences in 2025. This is a larger percentage increase compared to London overall (33.32%) and saw us move from 6th place in 2024 to 7th place in 2025. The minor category “Possession of Drugs” makes up a large proportion of Drug Offences; 57.30% in 2025 compared to 63.59% in 2024. The lower numbers of Drug Trafficking (or possession with intent to supply) have increased by 61.57%, from 268 in 2024 to 433 in 2025. Substance misuse is a crosscutting theme across the BCSP priorities and is known to be a driver for many offences especially serious violence. A 10-year Drug Strategy was published by the Home Office in 2021, and a local Combating Drug Partnership has been set up focusing on the supply, demand and treatment elements of the drugs market and the wider implementation of the strategy. Additionally, local policing through Project Adder has continued to increase operations and support for drug misuse and offences, which may result in increased identification of offences

Please note: Changes in policing strategies during the period this data was recorded will have led to fluctuations in recorded drug offences that do not necessarily reflect changes in actual crime levels. For example, proactive stop and searches for drugs could have resulted in an increase in the recorded offences in certain areas. Similarly, better development of intelligence reporting, alongside improved partnership working, can also lead to enhanced enforcement in relation to drug offences, with associated increases in detection figures. Drug use and possession are often considered ‘victimless’ crimes. As a result, much drug activity goes unreported and undetected, making drug offence data an incomplete picture of the true prevalence of drug offences.

Possession of Weapons

An increase in Posession of Weapons Offences in Bexley of 26.60%, from 94 in 2024 to 119 in 2025. This is a larger percentage increase compared to London overall (18.11%). Bexley ranked 5th place in both 2024 and 2025 compared to other London Boroughs. It should be noted that variation between many boroughs’ offence rates is small and at a similar level. The Police have increased work in the community to detect and arrest those carrying knives and weapons. The proactive operations (Operation Bablik & Operation Alverstone) have increased detections rates and identification of offenders. At the same time, our positive outcomes rate for possession of a knife / blade have increased 33%.

The minor category “Public Fear Alarm or Distress” makes up a large proportion of Public Order Offences; 64.59% in 2025 compared to 66.38% in 2024. Bexley ranks in 4th place compared to other London Boroughs in 2025, up from 7th place in 2024.

However, Bexley has moved up one saferty place to 7th in 2025 (rate of 2.27) from 8th in 2024 (rate of 2.02) compared to other London Boroughs, demonstrating that other London boroughs have experienced a more signficant increase in rape and sexual offences.

A decrease in Vehicle Offences in Bexley of 29.36%, from 2,405 in 2024 to 1,699 in 2025. This is a larger percentage decrease compared to London overall (13.98%).  The minor categories ‘Theft or Unauthorised Taking of a Motor Vehicle’ and ‘Theft from a Motor Vehicle’ make up the largest proportion of Vehicle Offences. Bexley saw an increase of 24.12% for ‘Theft or unauthorised taking of a Motor Vehicle’ (from 1,136 in 2024 to 862 in 2025) and a reduction of 35.53% for ‘Theft from a Motor Vehicle’ (from 881 in 2024 to 568 in 2025). This overall increase in Vehicle Offences saw us move from 8th  place in 2024 to 4th place in 2025 compared to other London Boroughs. The Ward with the largest proportion of Vehicle offences is West Heath with 17.08% of total crime offences. Vehicle crime is a high volume offence in Bexley, but due to lower threat and harm, combined with the ability to mitigate risk by increasing community awareness and steps that can be taken to secure vehicles safely, the BCSP have identified Vehicle Offences as an essential element of its Community Reassurance priority. At the same time, Motor vehicle crime has been set as a Neighbourhood Policing priority, ensuring a consistent focus by local teams as well as Specialist Crime. Specific operations were carried out in Bexley, along with the temporary appointment of a dedicated officer to proactively analyse police data systems, which has enabled the rapid identification and recovery of stolen vehicles, reducing offender confidence and increasing the perceived risk of operating in Bexley. Known offenders have been actively targeted using disruption tactics; and high‑visibility patrols were deployed in areas generating the highest demand to deter offending and reassure residents. Police also delivered property marking and crime prevention engagement, alongside the industry taking steps to make it more difficult for vehicles to be stolen.

Bexley ranked 10th place in both 2024 (rate of 20.39) and 2025 (rate of 20.81) compared to other London Boroughs. We have employed a Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG) Coordinator through the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) funding to promote reporting of incidents, delivery of professionals training, and support VAWG victims. VAtP is also sub-category of Serious Voiolence, as well as VAWG, which sit within one of the BCSP’s named priorities.  The Serious Violence Duty placed on all CSPs also includes an action plan to address this crime type.

The percentage of repeat cases has shown a decrease from a repeat victim percentage of 33.84% in 2024 to 28.71% in 2025. This rise in MARAC cases has mainly been due to a practitioner training programme which has enabled more cases to be identified and relevant pathways put in place alongside implementation of the coordinated community response in Bexley.

ASB is also a named BCSP priority in reflection of the volume of this crime type and impact of ASB on the community, and in order to ensure the BCSP is addressing risks at the earliest opportunity. It has been recognised that there are numberous mechanisms to report ASB and this data does not include all of those statistics. The ASB Working Group will be progressing a more emcompassing data profile in the coming year.
