Bexley Council is responsible for maintaining the borough’s public highway network, including around 545km of carriageways, 760km of footways, more than 19,500 streetlights and over 170 highway structures.

Maintaining these and other highway assets involves regular inspections, repairing defects, resurfacing roads, addressing potholes and footway defects, and delivering planned maintenance and improvements to keep the network safe, resilient and accessible.

In line with Department for Transport requirements, the Council publishes an annual Highway Maintenance Transparency Report. These reports provide information on the condition and management of the highway network, maintenance activity, performance and how available funding is being used.

The Council also maintains a Highway Asset Management Policy and Strategy (HAMP), which sets out the principles and approach for managing the highway network and its assets over the longer term. The HAMP is reviewed at key points to ensure it remains relevant to the condition and use of the network, Council priorities, legislation and national guidance, and available funding.
