Report a suspected breach of the building regulations

To report a suspected breach of the Building Regulations or building work that appears to have been carried out without Building Control approval, please contact us.

Building work may be considered unauthorised if it is being undertaken without a valid Building Control application. If you are concerned work may not have the required approval, you can check using the Building Control Application online service.

Report a breach

If your concerns relate to one of the following matters, please contact the relevant service instead:

  • You should report suspected breaches of planning control separately through the Planning Enforcement Investigation form
  • Party wall, boundary wall or building work affecting neighbouring properties are generally private civil matters. Advice should be sought from a party wall surveyor or other appropriately qualified professional. Further guidance is available in The Party Wall etc Act 1996 explanatory booklet
  • Noise complaints arising from construction noise may be handled by the Council’s Environmental Health team and should be reported separately through the Noise nuisance form
  • Unsafe working practices or construction site safety, including scaffolding, should be reported separately to the Health and Safety Executive
  • Scaffolding, hoarding or skips that are on highways may require a licence. Issues relating to these matters should be reported through the Council’s FixMyStreet service. 
  • Building control does not determine liability for damage caused to neighbouring properties through building work. Related claims or compensation are normally private civil matters
