Six important things to know about election day

Thursday 7 May will see local elections in Bexley and the whole of London. There are a number of important dates to remember to be able to cast your vote and have your say on who will run your local authority for the next four years.

1. Register to vote

You need to register to vote by Monday 20 April to be able to vote in this year’s local elections. It’s easy to register online. You will need your National Insurance number to register.

2. Postal vote applications

If you would like to vote by post you need to apply by 21 April by 5pm. You can apply for a postal vote online or by post. You’ll be sent a postal vote ballot pack containing a ballot paper and a postal voting statement.

3. Proxy vote applications

Need someone to vote on your behalf? The deadline to apply for a Proxy Vote is 28 April. You can only apply for a proxy vote under certain circumstances, including:

  • being away on polling day
  • being registered as an overseas voter
  • having a medical issue or disability
  • not being able to vote in person because of work or military service

Your proxy should be someone you trust to vote on your behalf. You’ll need to tell them which candidate you want to vote for.

4. Replacement postal vote ballot papers

If you have lost or damaged your postal vote ballot you can apply for a replacement from 30 April. The deadline for replacement will be 7 May at 5pm.

5. Voter authority certificates

No ID? You can get a Voter Authority Certificate online. Deadline 28 April. You will need to provide a digital photo of yourself and your National Insurance number.

6. Day of poll - 7 May

You’ll be sent a poll card just before an election telling you when to vote and at which polling station. Polls will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 7 May.

If you are voting in person please remember to take your ID or your Voter Authority Certificate.

Acceptable ID includes:

  • a UK or Northern Ireland photocard driving licence (full or provisional)
  • a UK passport
  • a Blue Badge

You cannot use a photograph, image on a phone or a photocopy of your ID.
