Live well, Age well
Residents aged 50+ living in Sidcup and nearby areas can now take part in a wide range of free activities that are designed to help them live well for longer.
The Live Well, Age Well pilot project is based at Sidcup Storyteller and sees the library transformed every Tuesday and Thursday into a hub of classes, activities and events that are all proven to be beneficial in helping people to sustain better health as they get older, allowing them to enjoy an independent, active and social life.
With NHS funding, the library service is working with local healthcare and social care specialists to design a programme of activities that will give older residents a chance to try new things, make new friends and improve their health through physical, social and creative activities. These are available for everyone over 50 and living in Sidcup, Footscray, Lamorbey, Blackfen or Bexley Village. If the pilot is successful, regular activities will be made available more widely.
Councillor Brian Bishop, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities said:
Sidcup Storyteller library is a landmark building at the heart of Sidcup High Street and is the ideal place for local people to explore new ways of being healthy. This project is especially exciting as it will bring the library to life on the two weekdays it is currently closed, meaning some extra access to library services can be offered alongside the hub of activities that are being programmed to support healthy ageing. Our libraries are all about supporting the community."
Councillor Melvin Seymour said:
There is now so much evidence to show that community based activities have a huge role to play in keeping people healthy as they transition into older age. Physical activities, social opportunities and the chance to be creative all play a key role in keeping us healthy, in terms of our mental, physical and cognitive health. This new pilot project will offer something for everyone”.
The initial programme features a wide range of free activities including Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, Fitness MOTs, Singing sessions, drawing classes and information sessions. The full timetable can be viewed at the library’s website.
Autism Awareness Event
Residents are invited to attend the Bexley Autism Awareness Event on Monday 20 April 2026, from 10am to 12pm, at Civic Offices, Bexleyheath.
The event is organised by the Bexley Autism Partnership Board and is open to anyone with an interest in autism. This includes autistic people, parents and carers, professionals, volunteers, Council staff and local residents who want to learn more about autism and the support available in Bexley.
The morning will feature guest speakers, including autistic people sharing their own experiences and perspectives. There will also be information stalls from local organisations, community groups and Council services, providing practical advice and details about local support, activities and opportunities. Attendees will have the chance to speak to service providers and make local connections.
The event supports the Bexley Autism Strategy 2024–2028, which aims to improve understanding, inclusion and partnership working across the borough.
Councillor Melvin Seymour, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services and Health, said:
This event is an important opportunity to listen to autistic people, raise awareness and make sure local services continue to reflect the needs of our community.”
The event is free to attend, but booking is essential.

MMRV vaccine
From January 2026, children will receive the MMRV vaccine as part of the routine immunisation schedule. MMRV protects against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chickenpox), offering the same benefits as the long-used MMR vaccine with added protection against chickenpox.
Countries that routinely offer chickenpox vaccination have seen major reductions in cases. MMRV has been safely used internationally for over a decade and contains weakened viruses that do not spread easily.
Two versions are available: ProQuad, which contains porcine gelatine, and Priorix Tetra, which is gelatine-free. Parents can speak to their GP or practice nurse if they prefer the gelatine-free option.
