Uncover History at Lesnes Abbey

Get ready to dig into the past. The Council in partnership with DigVentures, is hosting a week-long community archaeological excavation this April at Lesnes Abbey Woods.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s two-year ‘Lesnes 500’ project, this event commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Abbey’s dissolution. Visitors and volunteers can learn professional field skills, including scientific excavation, artefact collection and recording discoveries.

The week features:

  • Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 April: dedicated school engagement days.
  • Other days: opportunities for the community to visit or participate.
  • Saturday highlights: special sessions with the Bexley Archaeological Group and
    Young Archaeologists’ Club.

Beyond the trenches, enjoy workshops, historical talks and displays led by experts.
