Our Process To Develop The Strategy

To develop this strategy, we have:

  • engaged with over 80 key stakeholders, over 20 local organisations, and over 1200 residents from across the whole borough to understand the key issues and focus on what is important
  • reviewed the national picture of ‘what works’ and makes a difference to health and wellbeing and reducing health inequalities, notably the work of Sir Michael Marmot and the Institute of Health Equity
  • reviewed local need and data, including producing new Local Care Network (LCN) (see page 8) profiles for North Bexley, Clocktower and Frognal, and a new COVID-19 impact assessment comprising an Ages 5-19 Joint Strategic Needs Assessment and Vital-5 Health Inequalities Audit1

This strategy in context

The production of a Joint Local Health and Wellbeing Strategy is a statutory requirement and defines the need, priorities, and strategic actions at ‘place’ or local authority level, alongside the Vision for Health and Care in Bexley, set by our Local Care Partnership (LCP), the Bexley Wellbeing Partnership2. At system or regional level, the five strategic priorities for the SEL ICS for 2023-28 align well to our local priorities.

The SEL ICS strategic priorities are:

  • Prevention and wellbeing - Improving prevention of ill health, helping people in South East London to stay healthy and well.
  • Early years - Making sure that children get a good start in life and there is effective support for mothers, babies, and families before birth and in the early years of life.
  • Children's and young people’s mental health - Improving children’s and young people’s mental health, making sure they have quick access to effective support for common mental health challenges.
  • Adults’ mental health - Making sure adults have quick access to early support, to prevent mental health challenges from worsening.
  • Primary care and people with long-term conditions - Making sure people have convenient access to high-quality primary care and improving support and care for people with long-term conditions.

What is an Integrated Care System?

Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) were introduced by the Government in July 2022 and bring together organisations to work together on health, care, and wellbeing across a defined area. Bexley is part of the South East London (SEL) ICS, along with our neighbours in Bromley, Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark, and Greenwich.
