This year’s Foster Care Fortnight in May had the theme of “Fostering Moments.” In Bexley we used the time to bring to light some of the transformative stories shared by both foster carers and care-experienced children.
These heartfelt narratives showcased the incredible impact that fostering has on lives, highlighting moments of growth, love and resilience. Foster Carers shared heartwarming stories of the first time a shy smile turned into laughter, the pride of a school achievement and the comfort of a trusting hug. Meanwhile, children recount their journeys of finding a sense of belonging and support, often transforming their lives.

Currently we have two very young children with us, aged 4 and 2. The best moment is when they hug you or cuddle you and especially when I come home from work and open the door, the little one just runs towards me and jumps up to hug me. It reminds me of the time when my children were young and it’s a great experience.’’

A great moment for me was seeing the smile and absolute elation on the face of my young person when they opened an envelope from college which contained three certificates of achievement saying the word “pass”. They had never received any form of commendation for their efforts before and this was clearly evident by their response, which I was delighted to witness.’’

My young person in care got me a card when I was sick and it really meant a lot to me."

We often have a child come to us whose life is in complete chaos at that time and for us it’s like doing the practical things for them. Be it getting an oyster card, get a bank account, identifications, passports and such sort of stuff. In doing so the young person gains respect for you because they see you working tirelessly for them. Our young person has now turned his life around. He is attending full time college with no absences and no problems. He is also travelling abroad himself and comes with us on our family holidays. So, it is all these moments that makes it special.’’
