Summer 2024
The disused unit at 68 Pier Road is being transformed into a multi-use community space for Erith.
The new community hub will have a kitchen, an events area and a set of meeting rooms. It will be accessible for those of all abilities including wheelchair users and will have a Changing Places toilet facility. There will also be an indoor courtyard that local people can use to relax in and this will also provide a space for events.
Community groups participated in a workshop earlier this year and suggested names for the space and how best they thought it could be used. Information boards updating on the plans for 68 Pier Road are on display in Erith town centre. Work will begin in the autumn.
Thank you to volunteers at FORGE Friends of Erith Riverside Gardens and Bloominerith for helping to lift plants in the gardens in advance of the improvement works. They will either be replanted in the gardens or at other locations around the town. The gardens are being relandscaped to improve accessibility to the riverfront and a play area is being added.
Congratulations to The Exchange, the old Carnegie library in Erith, that the Council, local people and partners have transformed into a community hub. It has won a prestigious 2024 RIBA South East Conservation Award for great architecture.
The new Sidcup Storyteller - Library, Cinema, Housing & Café has won a prestigious Pineapple Award in recognition of its outstanding design and its success in bringing the community back to the High Street.
Cllr Munur, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Place said:
This is a fantastic achievement for the Council and residents, who play an important part in helping to design the developments we build in their communities.
We’ve always been clear that in our Borough we want the right kind of development, these awards recognise that we have achieved this.”
Cllr Cafer Munur, Cabinet Member for Place
