British Empire Medal for a community library volunteer

Kim from Bostall next to Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London

Kim Bryans, a volunteer at one of Bexley’s community-run libraries has been awarded the British Empire Medals (BEM) by His Majesty the King for her services to community-managed libraries.

The BEM marks the exceptional contributions and service of people from across the UK.

Kimberley attended a special ceremony at the Tower of London last month (4 November).  Medals were presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE, on behalf of His Majesty the King and watched by their family and friends.

From 2016 to 2022 Kimberly transformed two local libraries, Bostall and Bexley Village into Community Libraries.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the libraries offered services, following all guidelines to vulnerable residents in need of support.

Delivery services were set up for essentials and the team was on call for regular chats helping to keep users connected.

The Bostall and Bexley Village teams also identified the need for children to continue to access books during the COVID-19 pandemic and launched the borough's first library ‘Click and Collect’ service for readers, both young and old.

Kim continues to run Bostall Library with the help of around 25 volunteers from the local area.

As a small local charity, the team have provided not just a comprehensive library service but a community space for all.

Weekly activities have included:

  • adult and children’s activities
  • coffee mornings
  • knit n Natter sewing sessions
  • reading challenges
  • digital champion sessions
  • quiz nights
  • community cinema

Bostall Library installed the first Community Fridge in Bexley. It is also a Warm and Welcoming space for residents.

The help of various successful funding opportunities has made it possible for Bostall Community Library to enhance the services and library environment both inside and outside with the latest addition of a garden room for expanding groups.

Kimberly acknowledges that without her team of volunteers, these services would not be available and they are all part of the success in the community.

Councillor Sue Gower MBE - Cabinet Member for Communities & Housing said:

This is an amazing achievement for Kimberley and one that her team should be proud of. The award acknowledges her commitment and dedication to providing support for the local  community. It is great to see that their inspiring efforts have been rightfully acknowledged and celebrated.”
