Bexley is marking National Youth Work Week - an annual week-long celebration of everything about youth work – with a free ‘Youth Fest’ evening in Welling.

National Youth work week runs from Monday 6 November and is organised by the National Youth Agency to raise awareness of youth work. This year’s theme is - youth work in every place and space.

Bexley’s free ‘Youth Fest’ event, organised by the Council’s Targeted Youth Service team, is open to all young people in Bexley aged 11 to 18. It takes place at Welling Youth Centre, DA16 3JQ, on Friday 3 November, from 6.30pm to 9pm. The team would love to introduce the work they do with Bexley's young people to more of their peers.

A disco and barbecue food will be available, and you can also enjoy a non-alcoholic cocktail drink. Arts and crafts will also be on offer.

Our youth teamwork with over 400 young people who belong to the Council’s four youth hubs across the borough, where they run several different sessions.

These include:

  • Dedicated SEN provision – accessed by referral
  • Bexley Youth Council
  • Looked After Children’s Group
  • Day activities
  • Jack Petchey Award programme
  • Safe Space sessions

The hubs are based in Sidcup, Slade Green, Thamesmead and Welling. Activities in the hubs range from cooking, ‘do it yourself’ and music projects, to motorbike repairs, arts, crafts and performances. They also run projects designed to help with mental health and bullying issues, providing support and guidance.

The team also supports Bexley’s Youth Council which is regularly called upon by the Council to give their views on consultations. The Youth Council is open to young people living, working, or studying in the Borough of Bexley, aged 11 to 18. To get involved email chris.lee@bexley.gov.uk or phone 07792 661364.

Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Caroline Newton said:

Our Targeted Youth Services Team is made up of an amazing bunch of officers, staff and volunteers dedicated to the young people in our borough. These groups provide not only somewhere to have fun and relax, but in some cases a refuge from difficult situations. They go above and beyond to make sure that our young people are listened to. This national week is a great time to shine a light on all they do.”
