As local highway authority, the London Borough of Bexley is required to keep a list of streets that are maintained at the public expense.

This list records the following types of road:

• maintained at the public expense
• not maintained at the public expense (privately maintained)
• mixed responsibility, i.e. part maintained at the public expense and part privately maintained

The list of streets does not give any indication of whether public or private rights exist and only concerns maintenance status.

It is not necessary for the Council to own the land over which publicly maintained highway passes though it may do in some cases.
