Apply for a school place during the school year

This is known as an in-year application.

You can apply if your child:

  • has moved into Bexley
  • has moved house within Bexley
  • needs to change schools
  • needs a place outside the normal admissions round

Before you apply

Before you start your application, read the guidance notes and have your documents ready to upload.

Your application may be delayed if you do not upload the documents we need.

Important

Some schools manage their own in-year admissions and waiting lists.

Do not include these schools on your Bexley application. Apply to them directly.

Primary schools to apply to directly

Secondary schools to apply to directly

You will not be able to add these schools as preferences in the Bexley Parent and Carer Portal.

You can still use the portal to apply for any other Bexley school.

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan

If your child has an active Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), do not use this service.

If your child is already at a Bexley school, contact your child’s SEN case officer to discuss transferring schools. If your child is attending a school outside Bexley, contact the SEN officer at your local authority.

Choosing schools

You can list:

  • up to 4 primary schools
  • up to 4 secondary schools

If you want to apply for a school outside Bexley, you must apply through the local authority where the school is located.

We recommend choosing more than one school. Many year groups are already full, and places usually only become available when another child leaves.

When you will get a decision

We aim to process applications as quickly as possible.

Once we have received your application and all required evidence, you will usually get a decision within 15 school days.

We will consider the schools you have listed in the order you ranked them.

If we cannot offer a place at your first preference school, we will consider your next preference.

If a school is full, your child will be added to that school's waiting list automatically.

If a place is available, offers are made according to the school's published admission criteria.

If we cannot offer any of your preferred schools, we will tell you the outcome within 15 school days of receiving your completed application and all required evidence.

Applications submitted after 1 July will not be considered by schools until 1 September. This may delay your decision.

You can check the status of your application at any time in the Bexley Parent and Carer Portal.

We cannot process your application until we have received all required evidence. If you do not provide the evidence requested, your decision may take longer.

Updates about your application

We will contact you through the portal if:

  • we need more evidence
  • a school place has been offered
  • your child has been added to a waiting list
  • we need to tell you about a change affecting your application

If we ask for more evidence, we cannot continue processing your application until you provide the documents requested.

Upload supporting documents

To upload documents:

  1. Sign into the portal
  2. Select 'Edit application'
  3. Upload the requested documents
  4. Select 'Submit application'

Important

If you edit your application, any documents you have already uploaded will be saved.

If you start a new application, you must upload all required documents again.

If you are offered a school place

You can view your offer in the Bexley Parent and Carer Portal.

If you are offered your first preference school, you do not need to do anything.

If you are offered a lower preference school, your child will stay on the waiting list for any higher preference schools you named on your application. This means there are currently no places available in your child's year group at those schools.

If you do not want the place offered, you must decline it within 15 school days.

Before declining a place, make sure your child has another school place available.

Tell us if your circumstances change

You must update your application if any information changes, including:

  • your home address
  • your living arrangements
  • parental responsibility for your child
  • your child's residency or immigration status
  • any other information that may affect your application

Changes to your circumstances may affect your application or any school place offered.

We may ask for updated evidence before we can continue processing your application or confirm an offer.

Keep your contact details up to date

Make sure your email address and telephone number are correct so you can receive updates about your application and any school place offers.
