6 wellness walks in Bexley

We all know walking can do wonders for our physical health, but did you know getting outside can also boost your mood? Getting started can often be the hardest part, so we’ve rounded up six of our favourite walks for inspiration.

1. Lore of the Wild

Lesnes Abbey Woods, New Road, London SE2 0AX

Lore of the Wild is a downloadable audio storywalk and map which will guide you on a transformative journey around Lesnes Abbey Woods. Look out for the faces in the trees, make a decision at the crossroads, experience the oak tree dance, share wisdom with the Green Man and feel a part of the ancient past and the infinite future.

2. Walk through history

Bexley Archives & Local Studies Centre are busy preparing its guided walks for the spring and summer. These walks are a great way to find undiscovered gems and learn more about your local area. Contact the centre for more details, or call in to look at a unique collection of historic local maps, images and books to help you plan your own history walk.

3. WALX of wellbeing

Bexley residents can enjoy free volunteer-led walks through beautiful green spaces in the borough thanks to WALX in Bexley. The organisation is putting on free WALX of Wellbeing walks led by volunteers and walk leaders who are first aid qualified.

4. Foots Cray Meadows

North Cray Road, Sidcup, DA14 5AG

Foots Cray Meadows is a marvellous mixture of landscaped open space, meadows and woodland covering 97 hectares. Across the meadows, you’ll find a series of QR Codes that when scanned will tell you more about the area that you’re in. See if you can spot a water vole beside the River Cray or a great spotted woodpecker in the trees.

5. Green Chain Walk

This 50-mile walk is split into 11 easy-to-follow sections. Section 1 starts at Thamesmead finishing at Lesnes Abbey Woods. Section 2 begins at Erith Riverside and ends at Bostall Woods (Greenwich). Along the way you can enjoy Thames views, historic sites, wildlife spotting and green spaces galore.

6. London LOOP

The 150-mile London LOOP starts in Bexley. Section 1 is from Erith to Old Bexley and runs alongside the rivers and on open ground through Hall Place. Section 2 starts in Bexley High Street, following the Cray Riverway, passing through the grounds of Sidcup Place and into Scadbury Park nature reserve. It’s a great way to see beautiful open spaces and historic buildings.
