We want to continue to cut down on the amount of rubbish thrown away in Bexley every year by asking you for your help to put the right rubbish in the right bin.

Problems occur when recycling bins include the wrong items:

  • recycling materials can be spoiled and then have to be incinerated
  • the quality of the recyclable materials can be affected, making it harder to process
  • the sorting process can be dramatically slowed down
  • equipment used for sorting items can be damaged

All of these issues can create further problems for the environment and cost you the taxpayer more money.

Thank you for working with us to put the right rubbish in the right bin.

What goes in each bin?

Food waste is collected weekly. If you find that your green bin is getting full very quickly then why not start recycling food. It's easy to do and collected weekly.

You can request a replacement bin or bin removal or find out your collection date.

Where does my recycling go?

In 2022/2023 43% of Bexley’s rubbish was recycled, but with your help we can increase our recycling rate so that we get back to being the No 1 Recycling Borough in London.

When you recycle you really are reducing the amount of rubbish sent to landfills and incinerators and helping new items to be made from the recycled materials that are collected. Ensuring you recycle as much as you can and putting the right rubbish in the right bin is a really easy way for you to do your bit to help the environment.

The recycling that is collected in the white lidded bins is recycled locally in Crayford at the largest materials recovery facility MRF of its kind in Europe employing 260 people, many of them local. Once the recycling gets to the MRF it is sorted and separated into different types of materials by hand or machine (or both) before being sent to manufacturers who then make it into new products. Money obtained for the materials that are recycled is then fed back into Council Services across the Borough. Recycling from your blue bin, food bin and garden waste bin go to other processing facilities in the south-east of England.

Textile recycling

We have partnered with clothing reuse charity TRAID, to offer an additional way to pass clothes on for free using their home collection scheme. This service is open to all Bexley households, including flats and allows you to book a collection on a day that suits you. You can book a collection for a minimum of 1 large bag or 3 small bags of clothing. The more clothes you donate the better. They will also collect a small bag of broken small/medium-sized electrical items such as kettles and toasters at the same time as they collect your textiles.

You can call on 020 8733 2595 or book a free collection on the Traid website

A collector in a branded TRAID van will collect your donations.

Recycle dead batteries safely

Dead batteries, vapes or discarded electrical items containing batteries could cause serious fires if they are thrown away with the general rubbish or mixed with other recycling. Always take them to a recycling point.
