Tennis courts ready for renovation

The Council and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) agreed on a new partnership earlier this year that will breathe new life into park tennis courts across the borough.

The project will see £210,357.83 of investment across courts in Bexley’s public parks. The investment has come from the Government and LTA Tennis Foundation’s Park Tennis Project and the Council.

Seven park tennis venues will be renovated to ensure that quality facilities are available for the local community:

  • Belvedere Recreation Ground South
  • Danson Park
  • Northumberland Heath Recreation Ground
  • Russell Park
  • Sidcup Place
  • Waring Park
  • West Heath Recreation Ground

The project is part of a £30 million nationwide investment by the Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, delivered by the LTA, to refurbish thousands of park tennis courts across Great Britain, and open up the sport to many more people.

Raising Funds from development

The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is one mechanism that the Council, as a local planning authority, uses to raise funds from new development, to deliver local
facilities for local people.

In our Borough, the 2022/23 CIL raised £1.85m and has helped fund the following facilities:

  • School expansions at Birkbeck School, Mayplace School, Bursted Woods and Parkway school
  • SEN Provision at Cleeve Park and at Cornerstone Special School
  • Sidcup cinema and library and Thamesmead library
  • Regeneration of Erith - High Street improvements and restoration of the old Carnegie building now known as The Exchange
  • Thamesmead Innovation Centre upgrade works before it opened as the Engine House
  • Bexleyheath Phase 2 Development
  • Changing Places provision
  • Hall Place improvements and developments
  • An events space at Lesnes Abbey
  • Playground improvement programme
  • Tree planting
  • Traffic count sensors
  • Flood Risk Improvement schemes

Cabinet Member for Growth, Cllr Cafer Munur, said:

We have ensured that the CIL benefits local people and have used it to deliver facilities in our community that improve our health, wellbeing and the environment.

We want growth to happen in a controlled and sustainable way and CIL is a planning policy that makes additional good outcomes come from the Borough’s development."

Improving Riverside Gardens

Works to improve Riverside Gardens in Erith will begin in the Spring. Ground Control have been contracted to deliver the improvements which include a new playground and outdoor fitness equipment on the riverside terrace.

New planting will be added, including a dedicated growing space for the Friends of Riverside Gardens, increasing biodiversity, and improving the drainage in the Gardens and along Erith High Street. A new ramp will make the route between the gardens and the Thames Path accessible for all users, while the reconfiguration of ground levels will make it easier to move around within the gardens and provide better views across the River Thames.

The works to enhance Riverside Gardens follow the recent completion of improvements at Pier Square and on Erith High Street and are part of the wider Greater Erith programme. The programme is being funded by the London Borough of Bexley and the Greater London Authority through the Good Growth Fund.

Cabinet Member for Adult’s Services and Health, Cllr Melvin Seymour said:

Our Shared Lives Service plays an extremely valuable role in supporting vulnerable residents to build relationships, gain independence and be involved in their community.

I have had the privilege of meeting Shared Lives carers and people being cared for and can see how the service benefits both sides.

We are looking for carers who can provide a wide range of care, as the people we help and support have many different needs.

If you are interested in becoming a carer, we have a friendly Community Living and Support Team who are on hand to answer any questions you may have."

Keep your garden safe

With the arrival of spring, many Bexley residents will spend time in their gardens. Here are some tips to help you secure your garden and deter criminals:

  • ensure your fences are in good condition and at least two metres high
  • keep gates locked, even during the day
  • secure doors and windows on sheds and outbuildings with strong locks
  • don’t leave valuable tools or equipment lying around inside – store them in a secure place
  • consider an alarmed shed for added security
  • don’t let overgrown foliage provide hiding places for burglars
  • install motion sensor lights around your garden and doorways
  • consider installing security CCTV cameras to monitor your property
  • use timers to turn on lights and radios inside your house, when you are away
  • let your neighbours know you’ll be away and ask them to keep an eye on your property
  • if you see anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, report it to the police immediately
