The Council recognises the following unions for the purposes of collective bargaining for national pay and conditions of service for Local Government Services, Chief Officers, Teachers, Soulbury staff, Youth Workers and Tutors:

  • University and College Union (UCU)

  • VOICE

Legislation requires that employers give trade union representatives reasonable paid time off to undertake a range of trade union duties and relevant training. Duties include:

  • support for individuals in management procedures such as discipline and grievance
  • collective bargaining; and
  • consultation on redundancies, reorganisations, TUPE transfers, for example

The Council’s Trade Union Facilities Agreement (PDF, 125KB) sets out the agreed procedures for managing collective disputes and time off for trade union duties and activities. It provides for some union officials, who have a significant role in collective negotiation, consultation and employee representation, to be seconded to union duties for a proportion of their working week (for example, a fixed, weekly allocation of time off).
