The Council is responsible for maintaining a public highway network that includes over 354 miles of roads and 476 miles of footways.

Over the next four years we will invest over £30 million to fix Bexley’s roads and pavements. This will mean hundreds more roads are resurfaced and potholes fixed.

Investing even more money

In 2025/26 in addition to treating over 2,600 individual potholes, we carried out resurfacing or major patching at 132 individual locations across the Borough, covering around 135,000m2 of carriageway, that resolved potholes and other defects.

The Highways Maintenance Programme for 2026/27 will see a total of £9.1m invested, a 17 percent increase on last year. The programme prioritises roads for resurfacing and large patch replacements, as well as repairs to potholes and other small highway defects.

Lobbying Government for money

In addition to the Councils investment in our roads the Department for Transport have confirmed that they will be providing an additional £2.49m of funding for road maintenance in 2026/27.

They expressed the view in their letter confirming that the Bexley road network is professionally managed and that the Council is transparent in its spending. 

Bexley Street Works Team

Both Thames Water and gas company SGN are currently investing significantly in their network in Bexley and replacing their old cast iron mains.

Our Street Works team always look for opportunities to coordinate infrastructure upgrades and to use a “one-dig” approach.

Unfortunately, this is not always possible as we are constrained by legislation, that compels us to allow most works and the amount of road space.

A site meeting is always undertaken prior to major planned utility works to discuss if the road is wide enough to allow two utilities to work in the same location with their machinery. Once works have begun our street works team will visit the site and ensure any diversions are appropriately signed and cause the minimum possible disruption for residents.
