Site inspections
Before starting work, if you used an agent to make your Building Regulations application, please make sure they have provided you with:
- the latest drawings for your project
- a copy of our approval notice or acknowledgement letter
- an inspection schedule for your application
You or your contractor must notify us at least 48 hours before you intend to start work on site. You can do this online:
Notify us of your intention to start building works
Once work starts
You need to submit a commencement notice once works have formally started. If you are unsure whether the commencement stage has been reached, our inspector can advise you during their inspection. You can find further information and the commencement notification online:
You or your site representative must contact us to arrange further inspections at the key stages set out in our letter. This allows us to check compliance during construction.
Once work has been completed
Once the work is complete, you must provide a notification of completion. You should provide this before arranging a final inspection on site. You can complete it online:
After a satisfactory final inspection and once you have submitted all building control fees and relevant documentation, we will issue your completion certificate. This certificate provides proof to building societies, banks, and solicitors that, as far as reasonably possible, the work complies with the Building Regulations.
You should keep this certificate in a safe place, as you may need it if you sell your home or remortgage in the future.
