13. Dealing with disclosures on social media
The BCSP will routinely share information regarding the available reporting mechanisms for different types of crimes and abuse, and to the different services available to Bexley residents. We are committed to ensuring the reporting mechanisms are clear and accessible for our community.
Social media channels should not be used for reporting crimes and abuse. These channels are not consistently monitored and therefore any crime or abuse reported may not be responded to. Furthermore, crime and abuse should be reported by the party closest to the incident and not through a third-party mechanism such as social media. This is to enable an effective investigation.
Any crimes or abuse disclosed on social media may be reported to the relevant service or authority. Any person who makes such disclosure will have their name and social media account information shared with that service or authority to enable contact. By making such a comment on social media, account holders accept that their information may be shared.
Social media channels should not be used for sharing victim information, incidents or experiences without consent. These channels are not consistently monitored and therefore any request for support may not be responded to. Furthermore, victims should consent to this information being shared and to receiving support.
Where a crime of abuse is disclosed by a potential victim or someone known to the victim, and we believe there to be a risk of abuse, we may share the person’s name and social media account information with the relevant service or authority to enable contact. By making such a comment on social media, account holders accept that their information may be shared.
