Application forms and how to complete them

Sometimes employers need specific information to help them select candidates for interviews and ask you to complete an application form rather than send a CV.

Top tips

Paper-based applications:

  • allow plenty of time to complete the form
  • do not just attach your CV and leave the form blank
  • check the application form guide, e.g. what colour ink to use
  • do not use a pen that will smudge
  • allow plenty of time to post your application, so it gets delivered on time

Online applications:

  • make sure that your internet has a strong connection
  • check to see if the application is time-limited
  • watch your spelling as some online applications do not spell check
  • save your application at every possible opportunity
  • take a note of your login details as you may need to revisit your application
